Matthew Kessenich

Head Coach - Novice Racing Team


Matthew graduated from the University of Connecticut, Storrs with a degree in Physiology and Neurobiology, and a minor in Psychology.

Matthew started rowing in 2009 where he rowed for Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, VA for 3 years. He continued rowing in college for the University of Connecticut, and rowed in the top varsity boat all four years. Matthew helped revamp the program by pushing to establish a boathouse, erg room, and level of competitiveness.

In 2015, he earned 2nd at the American Collegiate Rowing Association Championships in the Varsity 2-, placed 7th at the Head of the Charles in the College 4+, and won the Head of the Fish in the Varsity 4+. In spring of 2016, he stroked the Varsity 8+ in a dual with Harvard and Boston College, made the B finals in the New England Rowing Championships, and finished 17th in the ACRA Championships out of 31 boats where he also made the Northeast All-Region Team.

Matthew has been coaching since 2012, starting with the Bull Run Rowers, a masters rowing club in Burke, VA. In the summers of 2014 and 2015, he worked with the USRowing Junior National Team in Pittsburgh, PA.
